Our vision.

A responsive relationship with nature is the foundation of health. We aim to help people connect and adapt to the natural environment we live in. Part of this is to also recognize negative impacts of built environments, and to surf the waves of our social environments.

Health and wellbeing are about context—the right response or the right relationship, at just the right moment. Our vision at San is to provide a place for people to learn about and explore this principle of life.

Bring the principles of life into practice.

Both acupuncture and Tai Chi belong to a long tradition of observing life in nature. Practitioners developed a set of principles to nourish human life by studying cycles of birth, growth, death, and rebirth in living things throughout the natural world. Practices that restore these principles in our daily lives are the foundation of San Healing Arts.

Henry Claflin, R.Ac

Henry is a registered acupuncturist with the Nova Scotia Association of Acupuncturists and martial artist. He grew up wandering in the woods and still feels most at home outside. He has two sweet and brilliant kids and a loving partner who is a fountain of light, creativity, and raw compassion.

Henry tries to embody, in all he does, the thinking and practices of the founders of East Asian medicine and martial arts, but he does not always succeed. He hopes only to pass on the teachings he has received as faithfully and fully as he can.

Testimonials

“It was my good fortune to be introduced to Henry by a mutual friend. He became my Tai Chi and Qi Gong instructor for a couple of years. We had our lessons outside in a park whenever possible. That was a bonus. Henry is patient, calm, compassionate and skilled. Good at adapting to changing needs and circumstances. Thoughtful about what he says and does. It is clear he is passionate about not only teaching Tai Chi and Qi Gong but also living the teachings. I would highly recommend him.

“Amongst other things, Tai Chi and Qi Gong helped my with balance, strength and flexibility as well as focused breathing and general well-being. All of this was very helpful as I have significant arthritis and asthma.”

“10/5 STARS! I've always been a skeptic when it comes to acupuncture and I've seen a few people before meeting Henry to help with my chronic back/neck pain - all with no success. Finally, a clinic opened up right by my house and I figured I might as well give it one final shot and so I met Henry and he truly is a magician at his craft!!!

I've been seeing Henry for over 1.5 years now and was truly DEVASTATED when I found out he was leaving for Halifax. He has been the only practitioner that I see on a consistent basis that really has helped CURE my back/neck pain, even after the pain was gone on my neck I consistently booked with Henry as he really helped maintain my overall health. Whether that was balancing my stress levels, stomach pains, tingly leg syndrome, and scar treatments. What was most amazing about Henry was how patient and invested he was in the care of his patients and that really resonated with me. You can go into a session with him, his magical hands would pick up whatever pain you were feeling and you would 100% leave that session feeling better.

I still don't understand exactly how he does it but after close to two years with him, I don't question his techniques anymore haha I just let him work his magic every time! I truly miss him in Toronto and haven't been able to find anyone close to him.

Halifax is SO lucky to have him! If you are feeling any sort of pain, or just want to maintain your health

HENRY WILL BE YOUR BEST FRIEND.”

“I studied tai chi with Henry Claflin for several months last year. He is an excellent teacher, skilled in the form and knowledgeable about the meaning behind it. I recommend him highly. Tai chi is both an exercise program and a way of doing meditation in movement. I find it calms me down and puts me in a good place to begin the day..”

“I was fortunate to have the opportunity to study Tai Chi with Henry and Derek when they taught at Rising Sun School of Tai Chi Chuan in Toronto. They are both personable, patient, and professional practitioners and instructors and it was a lot of fun to work with them. Tai Chi is a wonderful practice to learn and I highly recommend learning it with Henry and Derek.”
